Kim's Fuzzies

Please, if you visit one of the fuzzies on my list, whether you adopt or not, drop me a line and let me know your opinions of the pup as this can be helpful to me in finding the perfect home for some of these dears. And of course, if you adopt, please drop me a line so I can include you as a success story for your new family member.

To the best of my knowledge, all dogs below are currently up for adoption in the San Diego, Orange or LA Counties. ( )

The various rescue agencies have their own pre-screening requirements for potential adopters. The sites that I typically pull these from are listed at the bottom of this mailing in case you or a friend are seriously considering a fuzzy and want to check out the pre-screening procedures.

A lot of that is hair but she could also stand to lose a few pounds - pathetic that a naturally athletic dog like this was allowed to get so overweight.

Rocky's been working really hard on that eye cock that makes him look so sad and waiting for you to bail him out. Trust me, labs just aren't sad by nature so you've gotta know it was just for his head shot that he did this.

Those funny little ears are actually super soft. You won't be able to stop touching them and he won't complain cuz there is nothing he likes more than being with his person.
Garret is one of six puppies born to Gracie on Christmas day. He is the last of the litter of six awaiting his forever home. Garret is housebroken, crate trained, sits nicely for treats and has a natural heel position when on leash. He is a laid back puppy, incredibly easy to live with, who only wants to follow his foster mom wherever she goes. He spends most of his outdoor time off leash, content to stay at foster mom's knee. Garret was the runt of the litter and is not expected to grow very large. He will make a wonderful, calm and loyal friend to whomever is lucky enough to take this little man home. Puppies are a life-long commitment. They need time, training, vet care and healthy feeding to become good canine citizens. Don't even think of adopting a puppy unless you intend to invest the time and money and commitment required, and you can expect to lose a few good shoes along the way! - CSR
It never ceases to amaze me that gorgeous dogs like this ever get even close to being killed in a shelter before being rescued
Heinz is a typical lovable pup. He is active, friendly and rambunctious. He gets along great with other dogs and is very loving. Puppies are a life-long commitment. They need time, training, vet care and healthy feeding to become good canine citizens. Don't even think of adopting a puppy unless you intend to invest the time and money and commitment required, and you can expect to lose a few good shoes along the way! If you are interested in meeting Heinz, please contact Beth via email at beth.coastal@gmail.com. - CSR
Stop and think - if you adopted her, she'd be bounding like this straight into your arms!
Onellie Onellie's mom Onyx was rescued from a high kill shelter just days before she gave birth to her 10 puppies on April 26th. The puppies are absolutely adorable and seem to have inherited their moms wonderful happy temperament. Like Onyx, her puppies are very friendly, outgoing and confident. Very social, their tails wag nonstop when they see you! She took wonderful care of her babies and they have grown up to be very happy and outgoing. They love to play with their toys and also the big dogs in their foster home. When they are not running and playing, they are curled up in a puppy pile. These little gems are 7 weeks old and will be ready for their new homes after June 21st. Puppies are a life-long commitment. They need time, training, vet care and healthy feeding to become good canine citizens. Don't even think of adopting a puppy unless you intend to invest the time and money and commitment required, and you can expect to lose a few good shoes along the way! - CSR
Endless photo opportunities with this cutie as it's super easy to get her to cock her head for the camera
Sally & her sister Susie were rescued with their mom, Sarah. These little gals are just 4 months old and are just learning about life. I'm brand new to Coastal German Shepherd Rescue. Please check back shortly for more information and photos! Puppies are a life-long commitment. They need time, training, vet care and healthy feeding to become good canine citizens. Don't even think of adopting a puppy unless you intend to invest the time and money and commitment required, and you can expect to lose a few good shoes along the way! - CSR
Don't overlook the ones that aren't models - this guy is a perfect house pet for a calmer home and he is totally aware of, and grateful for, how his fortune has changed since being in rescue
So far, Boomer has not had the most wonderful of lives. He was so neglected by a previous owner. the animal shelter that found him had to put 22 pounds on his emaciated body. As you can see in his picture, his ears are badly damaged, but Boomer thinks this just gives him character - his foster family agrees. His immune system was so compromised by lack of nutrition, Boomer is currently fighting a few illnesses, including a yeast infection on his skin. While these are only temporary and our vets tell us he will make a full recovery, it is very sad for us to see him so uncomfortable. Boomer is about 8 years old. He's potty trained (amazing when you consider this is the first time he's probably ever been in a house) and gets along with the three other shepherds in his foster family. The highlight of Boomer's day is when his foster mom and sister get home. He gets off his bed and greets them at the door. The only things Boomer wants are good food and a warm bed. Will you open your home and heart to our dear, sweet boy? If you are interested in meeting me, please contact Tricia via email at TandBWatts@aol.com. - CSR
I love the blue ticking on this gal. She is a typical beagle so be prepared for an active and sometimes talkative companion. Not recommended for apartments unless your neighbors like chatting with your pets through their walls.

He could use a little meat on his bones (see those poor hip bones sticking out) but as lo doesn't seem to mind having the extra layer of warmth that a sporty sweater will add
Name: Walter Type: dog Age: 1 year Size: 5 pounds Gender: male Breed: Chihuahua Ok with Dogs?: Yes Ok with Cats?: Unknown Info: Walter is a happy, friendly little guy who loves to cuddle and get loads of attention. He is funny, active and a full of personality. We suggest teenagers for Walter. - RC

Don't overlook the older pups - they need homes too and sometimes, if you are only a few years from a travel filled retirement, maybe you don't want a dog that is a 15 year commitment but can provide a loving 5 year home for a gentle soul.
Shadow (Age: 10=ish, Weight: 25lb, Sex: female, Breed: fluffy dog....) Her lifelong pal is Ben - check out his bio, too, cuz they need to be rehomed together. Good ole family dogs. Their previous mistress has passed on. We've gotten their teeth cleaned, x-rays done, blood panels - very thorough exams. Nice pooches. - BB
Ben needs to be rehomed with Shadow - above - and could use a controlled diet...
Ben (Age: 13-ish, Weight: 28lb, Sex: male, Breed: beagle - mix?) He's all white - sure got a beagle body! His lifelong pal is Shadow and they must go together. Both have had their teeth cleaned, blood panels done, x-rays - very thorough exams. They are on special food - the Science Diet you get at the vets to help their kidneys. Easy going and lovely - BB
A really happy little guy
Shasta (Age: 5 yrs, Weight: 18lb, Sex: male, Breed: terrier/llhasa) Little blond wirey coated guy. Pals with Robbie. He's energetic, friendly, upbeat personality - come visit and hang with these guys soon as you can! Adorable underbite! - BB
Blind dogs are very inspiring as they simply don't let it hinder them from enjoying their lives the way a human would
LocoCoco (Age: 9, Weight: 45lb, Sex: female, Breed: beagle x) Blind, very relaxed and easy going pooch. Loves to lounge - dogs don't really need their eyesight to get around very well. Their noses take care of 'em. She could use a little diet program - thyroid is fine.... Oh, wouldn't it be great for her to have a nice foster home who didn't move the furniture a lot.... - BB
Helen Woodward always has adorable pups
Clue German Shepherd- blend Sex:Female-spayed

I don't really care for the fact that Helen Woodward uses the term "blend" instead of a mix, but cute nonetheless
Peanut Pekingese- blend Sex:Male-Neutered

The two colored eyes would take some getting used to for me but other than that, she's a typical adorable bouncy pup that will add new life and joy to your home

I am so surprised by how many peke's we're seeing in shelters lately. Peke owners don't usually give their dogs up.

Want a lovable cat and kid friendly fuzzie - this is your guy!
Tahoe von Thornburg is just a big adorable fluff ball! He is a Golden Retriever mix, he looks like someone’s make believe story book dog. He is just too cute for words. He is as charming as he looks. When we got him he was in need of a very good brushing, he was happy to have kids pulling and yanking on his coat. He would whip around to give them a kiss for spending time with him. So many dogs get very impatient, plus it can hurt when there are tangles. Tahoe is 76 pounds of love! He is very good with other dogs and we will do a cat test soon. He knows sit and walks well on a leash. We were rescuing a truck load of German Shepherds who had run out of time at an over crowded shelter, just look at that happy face and you know why we couldn’t leave Tahoe behind. Tahoe is sunshine and happiness and gratitude, how wonderful to wake up each morning to such a delightful being! - GS
A funny little monkey. She will certainly keep you laughing
BABY von Bucknam We have 5 adorable 9 week old puppies. 4 girls and one boy. We're not sure what they're mixed with but they will be on the smaller side. Maybe 25-50 pounds, depending on the puppy. Their foster parents say they're such delightful pups, and their 3 kids love having them there, whether they pups are chewing on their shoe laces or just running around chasing each other .. they're lots of fun! - GS
A beautiful example of all that a lab is. He will be neutered prior to adoption.
Cody Breed: Yellow Labrador Retriever (purebred) Gender: Male Weight: Other: Altered: No Ref. no.: 269 Cody is my name and fetching is my game. My family could no longer care for me and I am looking for a new ball team. Besides being a fetch master, I am a terrific family dog. I’ve lived with other dogs and children. I am nicely mannered, know basic commands, good on leash and am a stellar car traveler. I am doing great with my foster canines and am learning house manners and what a doggie door is. I am looking to be a full time member of an active household, willing to take me on family outings and not leave me in a backyard for hours on end. I’m off to get neutered, but I’d love to meet you. Additional information: *Current on shots Contact: Labradors and Friends Dog Rescue Group Phone: 619-990-7455 E-Mail: labradorsandfriends@yahoo.com - LAB
He's gonna be beautiful. Let me know if you need some recommendations for good positive reinforcement trainers.
Bugsy Breed: Labrador Retriever (mix) Age: 1 year Gender: Male Weight: Black Other: I need a foster home. Altered: Yes Ref. no.: 238 I don’t know nothin’ but I’m cute as a bug. Bugsy here, all puppy growing into my adult body. I still have my fuzzy coat and a fuzzy recollection of my manners. I also have some puppy habits like grabby mouth and stuff. So I’ll be looking for a full time family with a full time commitment in helping with my canine etiquette. I like other dogs and wouldn’t mind going to school with them. I promise to grow into a handsome gentleman that’ll make you proud! He'd be perfect for an older couple and even in a condo or apartment. Check out the video on the FOCAS site - he's charming!
James * Small * Male * Breed: Chihuahua * Age: 1 Year, 7 Months Old * Weight: 9.00 lbs * FOCAS ID#: 9316 * Gender: Male * Size: Small * Type: Dog * Care: Needs loving home James is one special little guy. He had a tough start and because of his timidness, he will need a quiet, adult only (no children under 18) home where he can continue to thrive. He LOVES going on long walks or jogs and is enjoying the condo life. He has doggie friends but would like to have your undivided attention at home. James knows sit and is housetrained and sleeps in his crate all night. And while he is entertained with a rousing game of fetch he is also content to just sit with you and relax. He is the consummate ego boost at the end of the day. His enthusiastic greeting will make all the bad days melt away. Do you have what it takes to give James the home he deserves? If so, please call Cyndi at 619-750-7755. - FOCAS
About the Fuzzies

The Fuzzies were born in 2003 as a collection of currently available dogs that appealed to me as I looked through various rescue and shelter web sites. My hope was that friends would consider a rescue or shelter dog for the next addition to their families once they saw how many adorable ones were out there.

Kim's Fuzzies has grown quite a bit since then but the goal is still the same. I want to present that there are other places to adopt new family members than backyard breeders, puppy mills and pet stores (Please note that I support the aspirations of legitimate breeders to better their breeds without an eye towards pimping their dogs for money). I want to show people that their images of shelter and rescue dogs may be wrong - there are stunning dogs that end up in shelters and move to rescue every day. There are also, unfortunately, stunning and adoptable dogs that get euthanized every day because there are never enough rescues to help solve the problem. Awareness is everything.

Please do not assume that, if you see a dog you like and then they aren't on the next list that they have been adopted. I rotate the fuzzies I include to give the best exposure to a greater number of potential adoptees. Always call the shelter or rescue and ask the status of any dog you find yourself drawn to.

Additionally, if you are drawn to an animal but aren't sure you're ready for the lifelong commitment, please consider fostering (a temporary arrangement that pulls them from the danger of euthanization to live with you for a short time until they find the perfect forever family). It is so incredibly rewarding and addictive. Let me know if you need information about how to do this and I'll hook you up.

The sites that I typically pull these from are as follows, in case you or a friend are seriously considering a fuzzy and want to check out the pre-screening procedures:

San Diego Department of Animal Control - CS
Friends of County Animal Shelters - FOCAS
San Diego Humane Society - HS
Rancho Coastal Humane Society - RC
Helen Woodward Animal Center - HW
Westside German Shepherd Rescue of L.A. - GS
Labradors and Friends - LAB
Beagles and Buddies - BB
Pit Bull Rescue San Diego
Coastal Shepherd Rescue - CSR

Who am I?

My name is Kim Smith and I'm just a person who happens to really love animals. With The Fuzzies, I am trying to do my small part to help out in the world. I currently live with a 6 year old golden (Borrego), a 13 year old gray tabby (Shadow), a 7 year old black tom cat (Tobee) and a couple of ratties (Spring and Winter). I foster for multiple rescues as they need me (mostly puppies cuz my Borrego loves puppies), do web work as asked, am on the Board of Pit Bull Rescue San Diego, as well as keeping up on Borrego's training and staying current my own animal education. If I don't know the answer to someone's question, I WILL find it out. Oh yeah - I have a full time job outside of the animal world as well.

I started looking through all the rescue and shelter sites when I was looking to adopt my golden a number of years ago. I was surprised at how many resources there are beyond breeders and pet stores, and I enjoyed looking through the sites and reading the stories.

Unfortunately I had a very bad experience with the rescue organization that I tried to adopt through - they actually told me that I was being irresponsible considering dog ownership since I work full time and there was no way they would consider placing a dog with me. I got furious and irrational and ended up adopting my Borrego from a disreputable back yard breeder to "show them". Don't get me wrong, I love my Borrego to death but, health-wise, she is every argument against backyard breeders. She is highly neurotic, had to have both hips replaced before she was one year old, is allergic to most foods as well as many airborne allergens...

In retrospect and calmer emotions, I realized that I had become a part of the problem, not the solution. I started to research rescue organizations that really did have the animals best interests rather than their own egos at stake. Kim's Fuzzies were borne of this research and I started emailing them to friends and family. As the word spread, the Fuzzies has grown to a subscribership of over 200 (free and no obligation) and I get emails and calls from shelters, rescues and private folks for help with whatever level of connection they need. I love it and feel like my little part really is making a difference in some canine lives!
