To the best of my knowledge, all dogs below are currently up for adoption in the San Diego, Orange or LA Counties. ( ) The various rescue agencies have their own pre-screening requirements for potential adopters. The sites that I typically pull these from are listed at the bottom of this mailing in case you or a friend are seriously considering a fuzzy and want to check out the pre-screening procedures.

The photo doesn't do her justice. You need to meet her in canine.

He had a horrific beginning to his life but he's willing to put that behind him and move on to the happy part of his life.
Chandler Labrador Retriever (short coat) : : Male (neutered) : : Adult : : Medium Chandler was picked up as a stray and brought to the Devore shelter. He had a "tumor" on his shoulder and a "clouding" of his eye. Rescued literally an hour before being euthanized we all rallied together to get him safe and then onto our vet in San Diego. When the vet called we were horrified...this big love was used for BB target practice! The clouding in his eye is from a BB lodged in it. The swelling in his shoulder/chest is from shrapnel and pellets causing a massive infection. He also has BB's in his sinus cavity and spine. Amazingly, all Chandler wants is love and affection! We are hoping antibiotics will stabilize the infection so he can have surgery to remove the pellets and shrapnel causing the infection. There is concern it is in the bone, but we will cross each bridge in due time. Chandler was picked up as a stray and brought to the Devore shelter. He had swelling in his shoulder/chest that was from shrapnel and pellets causing a massive infection. Amazingly, all Chandler wants is love and affection! At this point Chandler has had surgery to remove the BB's from his shoulder and his eye appears to have stablized. He is now living in a foster home with 5 other dogs and doing well. He loves to race around the yard with his doggie friends, chase balls and toys, and snuggle up for hugs and kisses. He is crate trained, house broken, and working on leash training. He wants to please and is also very attentive. Chandler is the ultimate dog who loves to play but settles down nicely when told. He is waiting for his next adventure and a home he can call his own. Leon Labrador Retriever : : Male (neutered) We have no idea how our boy Leon ended up at a super high kill shelter as an unclaimed stray, it took us about 1 second to realize he was coming home with us! Two year old Leon is currently being fostered with kids (young ones) cats, dogs including a young puppy and he's every neighborhoods kids very best friend. He's on the mellow yet playful side, is super sweet and has been a perfectly well mannered gentleman. If you are looking for a new best friend who loves everything and everyone Leon is your boy About Leon Status: Available for Adoption (adoption info) Species: Dog General Color: Yellow - LAB
Bi-colored eyes freak me out a little but many people do like them - do you?
Scout Siberian Husky / Australian Shepherd : : Male (neutered) Scout is a very handsome Siberian husky mix. We know. Not a drop of Lab in there whatsoever, another good "Friend." You see, Scout came into the shelter with Hallie, a beautiful purebred yellow Lab. They were from the same family and were destined to be transferred to the dreaded Devore shelter, where Scout would have likely been walked off the transport truck and taken in the back and euthanized right away. It was his lucky day, because we're suckers for dog buddies and couldn't leave him behind, so Hallie's good dog friend caught a ride into rescue too. Hallie has already been adopted, and now Scout is waiting patiently for his forever home. He's a super nice dog and absolutely gorgeous. - LAB

Just barely over 2 months old.
Camilla Charlotte delivered her 7 cute chickadees in a foster home. They have been given a good start in life with a lot of love and attention. These pups are playful, smart, and beautiful to boot! Charlotte was found wandering the street and picked up by a good Samaritan. She asked a friend to keep them over night while she searched for a rescue to take her in, as she suspected she was pregnant. Somehow, Charlotte ended up in a city shelter while the good Samartan networked her to find her safety. Hearing about her story, we knew we had to step in a help. We rescued Charlotte as soon as her stray hold was up at the shelter and brought her to safety. A visit to the vet's confirmed that she was in fact pregnant, and close to delivery. Charlotte went directly from the vets to her foster home, where she was given a bath, good food, and a warm room to call her own. Charlotte delivered 7 healthy babies on March 11th under the care and supervision of her foster mom. The pups are thriving. They love to play and having been learning social skills from their mom and other 4-legged foster siblings! We are asking for a minimum donation of $500 for Charlotte's chickadees. Puppies are a life-long commitment. They need time, training, vet care and healthy feeding to become good canine citizens. Don't even think of adopting a puppy unless you intend to invest the time and money and commitment required, and you can expect to lose a few good shoes along the way! If you are interested in meeting Camilla, please contact us via email at ocdogs@coastalgsr.org. Don't forget to fill out our online application. The minimum adoption donation ranges from $300 to $400. This amount only partially covers the cost of veterinary care, boarding fees, and other miscellaneous expenses involved in the temporary care and adoption of our dogs and is tax deductible. Prior to placement, all dogs will be spayed or neutered, receive current vaccinations, and are usually microchipped. If not, arrangements will be made on an individual basis. Special consideration may be given to those willing to adopt older dogs or dogs with physical problems. - CSR
She's been a loving momma but now it's her turn to be loved.
Basil and the B babies had a rough start. They were turned into a county shelter as strays and sat in a cage at the shelter waiting to be rescued. Thankfully we were able to rescue the entire family! Momma is a spectacular rottie with an amazing temperament. Her puppies are now 8 weeks old and ready to go to homes of their own! If you are interested in meeting Basil, please contact us via email at ocdogs@coastalgsr.org. - CSR
Can't you just picture him sleeping on your couch
Thatch is absolutely adorable. He is extremely loving with people and has quickly learned that other dogs are ok. The shelter labelled him as "potentially dog aggressive" but after about 2 hours of hanging in a crate surrounded by other dogs, Thatch has caught on quickly that other dogs are okay. He is learning how to play with a bunch of German Shepherds and has quickly understood that he is not king of the hill. Thatch is probably about 2 years old. He does have a limp and we are working with our veterinary team to determine what is going on. Thatch readily goes into a crate, would prefer to sleep on the bed :) and will make a great family addition! Update 2/17/12: Thatch has had new xrays done with radiology review. There is no apparent bone injury to his leg. Both the radiologist and his veterinary team are confident that he has nerve damage in the leg. He could have been hit by a car or his leg could have been hung up on a fence - we just don't know. He has some use of the leg - he tends to use it as a lever - he may regain additional use or he may not - there is no way to tell for sure. He is not in pain, he just has a floppy leg. He can keep up with the best of them in his foster pack. While Thatch probably won't be a great fit for a hiking family, he will fit just fine in a family that is looking for a non shedding companion to take for walks, to the park, to soccer games! If you are interested in meeting me, please contact us via email at ocdogs@coastalgsr.org. - CSR

They're looking for chihuahua savvy owners. That would not be me...
Coco & Sugar Chihuahua: An adoptable dog in Oceanside, CA Small • Baby • Female ? Sugar and Coco-Bean are approx. 2.5 yr-old female 'twins', and not spayed. They were the only 2 pups in the litter, and have never been separated from eachother since birth. Naturally, if they can stay together & be placed together, that would be the best as far as them acclimating to their new home. Sugar is more reserved/shy than Coco-Bean, and is approximately 4.5 lbs. She is SUPER sweet, loving, affectionate, and LOVES to sit on your shoulder like a parot! That's her FAVORITE place to be weather you're sitting on the couch, driving the car, or even walking around! She just wants to be held 24/7, and will give you 'kisses' by licking your face all the while. She's not much of 'barker', but does on occassion like any dog will do, when seeing 'strangers' for the first time, or when someone rings the doorbell. Coco-Bean is the smaller of two girls weighing in at approx. 3.5 lbs, but don't let that fool you. She's a little fire-cracker! She's got spunk that far exceeds her tiny size! Naturally that makes her the more assertive one of the pair, and she's also protective over Sugar. However, this little lady is also a lover, and it every bit as affectionate as Sugar! She LOVES to be held/carried, will snuggle her little face into your neck, and will smother you with 'kisses', too! They are in desparate NEED of a full-time family who understands the personality 'quirks' of Chihuahuas (i.e. 'protective of thier masters' & slow to warm up to strangers), and who wants to love them on a permanent basis! Like any Chihuahua, you have to earn thier respect/love, but once you do the rewards are ENDLESS! They are loving, sweet, fun, playfull, loyal, and just fun! Both girls: walk on a harness/leash just fine are slow to warm up to strangers, but will do so more quickly when on 'neutral' territory, AND if the 'stranger' goes at thier pace/has good 'Chihuahua manners' (i.e. let the girls come to them, let the girls smell you before trying to pet them, attempt to pet under the chin at first NOT on top of the head, etc.). are potty-mat trained, ride well in the car (Coco on your lap, and Sugar on your shoulder), LOVE to sleep under the covers in bed with you, LOVE to play with toys (fetch, tug-of-war, etc.), will 'sit' for treats/bits of chicken, can't get enough walks (so, they need someone who is a little more active or home more) LOVE to go, go, go anywhere AND everywhere you do (thankfully, thier 'portable' size makes it easy to do just that)! - BNB
Might be a good first dog for a low energy family
Faith Australian Shepherd: An adoptable dog in Oceanside, CA Large • Adult • Female ? Faith is a 9 year old Australian Shepherd. She was relinquished to us because her owner could no longer care for her. She such a sweet girl. She is very low maintenance. She likes short, slow walks and to be loved by her people. She is in good health but needs to lose a few lbs. :) Faith would be a wonderful companion for a family that is not too active but that has plenty of love to give. If you are interested in meeting Faith please e-mail Pam at BoxersNbirds@aol.com or call Mission Animal & Bird Hospital at (760)433-3763 x224 - BNB
About the Fuzzies

The Fuzzies were born in 2003 as a collection of currently available dogs that appealed to me as I looked through various rescue and shelter web sites. My hope was that friends would consider a rescue or shelter dog for the next addition to their families once they saw how many adorable ones were out there.

Kim's Fuzzies has grown quite a bit since then but the goal is still the same. I want to present that there are other places to adopt new family members than backyard breeders, puppy mills and pet stores (Please note that I support the aspirations of legitimate breeders to better their breeds without an eye towards pimping their dogs for money). I want to show people that their images of shelter and rescue dogs may be wrong - there are stunning dogs that end up in shelters and move to rescue every day. There are also, unfortunately, stunning and adoptable dogs that get euthanized every day because there are never enough rescues to help solve the problem. Awareness is everything.

Please do not assume that, if you see a dog you like and then they aren't on the next list that they have been adopted. I rotate the fuzzies I include to give the best exposure to a greater number of potential adoptees. Always call the shelter or rescue and ask the status of any dog you find yourself drawn to.

Additionally, if you are drawn to an animal but aren't sure you're ready for the lifelong commitment, please consider fostering (a temporary arrangement that pulls them from the danger of euthanization to live with you for a short time until they find the perfect forever family). It is so incredibly rewarding and addictive. Let me know if you need information about how to do this and I'll hook you up.

The sites that I typically pull these from are as follows, in case you or a friend are seriously considering a fuzzy and want to check out the pre-screening procedures:

San Diego Department of Animal Control - CS
Friends of County Animal Shelters - FOCAS
San Diego Humane Society - HS
Rancho Coastal Humane Society - RC
Helen Woodward Animal Center - HW

Who am I?

My name is Kim Smith and I'm just a person who happens to really love animals. With The Fuzzies, I am trying to do my small part to help out in the world. I currently live with a 9 year old golden (Borrego), an 11 year old black tom cat (Tobee), a 6 year old black Tom cat (Buddy) and a 2 year old rabbit (Hef). I foster for multiple rescues as they need me (mostly puppies), am on the Board of Pit Bull Rescue San Diego, as well as keeping up on Borrego's training and staying current my own animal education. If I don't know the answer to someone's question, I WILL find it out. Oh yeah - my day job is with the Petco Foundation helping other rescues and shelters to succeed in our common goal of no more homeless pets.

I started looking through all the rescue and shelter sites when I was looking to adopt my golden a number of years ago. I was surprised at how many resources there are beyond breeders and pet stores, and I enjoyed looking through the sites and reading the stories.

Unfortunately I had a very bad experience with the rescue organization that I tried to adopt through - they actually told me that I was being irresponsible considering dog ownership since I work full time and there was no way they would consider placing a dog with me. I got furious and irrational and ended up adopting my Borrego from a disreputable back yard breeder to "show them". Don't get me wrong, I love my Borrego to death but, health-wise, she is every argument against backyard breeders. She is highly neurotic, had to have both hips replaced before she was one year old, is allergic to most foods as well as many airborne allergens...

In retrospect and calmer emotions, I realized that I had become a part of the problem, not the solution. I started to research rescue organizations that really did have the animals best interests rather than their own egos at stake. Kim's Fuzzies were borne of this research and I started emailing them to friends and family. As the word spread, the Fuzzies has grown to a subscribership of over 200 (free and no obligation) and I get emails and calls from shelters, rescues and private folks for help with whatever level of connection they need. I love it and feel like my little part really is making a difference in some canine lives!

Please, if you visit one of the fuzzies on my list, whether you adopt or not, drop me a line and let me know your opinions of the pup as this can be helpful to me in finding the perfect home for some of these dears. And of course, if you adopt, please drop me a line so I can include you as a success story for your new family member.
