To the best of my knowledge, all dogs below are currently up for adoption in the San Diego, Orange or LA Counties. ( ) The various rescue agencies have their own pre-screening requirements for potential adopters. The sites that I typically pull these from are listed at the bottom of this mailing in case you or a friend are seriously considering a fuzzy and want to check out the pre-screening procedures.

My foster, Oreo
I never thought this time would come but Oreo has an approved application and has met one of the two applicants. As with all people, she was both submissive and sweet with him. He works with me at PETCO Corporate but in a different department so he was able to come by several times to see her and puppy sat for me during a meeting last Friday. His fiance will meet her on Wednesday and we will be able to determine then if she is a fit for their home. It seems like the answer will be yes. I have to say my heart is heavy and I have begun the emotional work of detaching myself from her. This is the only part of fostering that I really hate. - PBRSD

This is a true example of how wonderful a mix is - and who knows what this mix is...
Melina von Kern is an adorable 5 month old mix of many cute breeds. Although she's not a German Shepherd, we just couldn't leave her behind. Her hopeful big eyes were watching us a as we were taking a shepherd down the hall to our transport van. What can we say, we're softies. Per her foster mom: Melina is a very friendly pup ready to give you kisses. She was content on her first day here to lay by my son while he worked outside. She sleeps fine the whole night through in her kennel and is learning to sit. - GS
This beauty would fit into any home including one with cats and/or kids
Jazz von Porterville is a tall, tan and handsome 2 year old German Shepherd mix. Whatever he's mixed with must have been an easygoing, friendly breed. Jazz has a calm temperament and wasn't bothered by anything happening around him during our adoption event. He's great with other dogs, kids and we're told he's good with cats. He's an athletic guy and requires high fencing. He's such a handsome dog, you have to come meet him to appreciate his beauty and wonderful personality. - GS

Sweet and petite
Daizee was a last minute save on Memorial Day when we were notified of her plight - there was a concern that she had parvo but after hospitalizing her for less than 24 hours, it appears that it was a reaction to her vaccine - she is doing extremely well - happy & thriving. Daizee should top out under 60 lbs at maturity. Puppies are a life-long commitment. They need time, training, vet care and healthy feeding to become good canine citizens. Don't even think of adopting a puppy unless you intend to invest the time and money and commitment required, and you can expect to lose a few good shoes along the way! If you are interested in meeting me, please contact Beth via email at beth.coastal@gmail.com. - CSR
This poor baby isn't sure what happened to his family. We think he might have lived with children before and would like to again.
Patton found himself lost and bewildered after the 4th of July holiday. He wandered onto the secure grounds of a hospital and searched for his family he was lost from. Days turned into weeks and the staff began noticing Patton had settled in and was living on the grounds of the hospital. The very caring officers that worked here began feeding Patton and eventually befriended him. He became a constant companion for one officer and would join him as they walked the grounds of the hospital. Staff at the hospital reached out to a local rescuer who contacted Coastal. We just happened to be in the area today and offered to come by and see if we could help Patton out. When we got to the hospital, we found a very young, very pretty boy who was clearly lost and confused. Unfortunately, Patton does not have a collar, id or a microchip---so there is no way to know if a family was ever looking for him. Patton is under our care now and we are sure that we can find him a loving home where he will not be left to fend for himself ever again. We believe Patton is about 2 years old. He is a gorgeous silver and black German Shepherd and has a very nice plush coat. He has met a few of the other dogs at the rescue and seems to like other dogs and also seems to love children. If you are interested in meeting Patton, please contact Tiffany via email at tiffanycgsr@sbcglobal.net. - CSR
I think you should always take a look when a breed rescue decides to take a breed other than their specialty. To me that usually means that that dog is probably something special.
Meet Squirt! Squirt is our recent stowaway---an Aussie mix masquerading as a German Shepherd. Squirt was tucked away in a dark kennel at a very high kill animal shelter and listed as a German Shepherd Dog. When we got her out of the kennel, we found a wiggly, waggly, happy as can be.....australian shepherd mix. Knowing that Squirt was going to be euthanized that very day and seeing how happy and loving she was, we could not put her back in that kennel only to be killed hours later. So, Squirt is a Coastal German Shepherd Rescue dog now! She is a darling girl regardless of what breed she is and she has a zest for life. She wears a smile as big as her face and greets all with a complete body wag! Squirt is also doggy and kid friendly. An all around GREAT family dog. If you are interested in meeting Squirt, please contact Tiffany via email at tiffanycgsr@sbcglobal.net. - CSR
A sweet gal - well matched with same size dogs and a boxer savvy family
Lilly came to us from San Diego Animal Control in July 2010. She was part of a group of boxers that was seized from another Boxer rescue group and was with SDAC for many months during the court case. She is currently being monitored for a condition called Megaesophagus but is doing wonderfully on a controlled feeding routine and oral medications. She is a VERY loving girl and gets along with dogs her size and adults. She is learning her basic obedience commands and Loves to sit beside you and have you rub her head. Don't let that calm demeanor in the photo fool you, she can run and wrestle at full speed with her friends Lucky the labrador mix and AnnaBelle the boxer when she is let out into the yard to play with them. She would be happy in a home with other large dogs or in a home with her as the only child. If you are interested in meeting her, email BoxersNBirds@aol.com or contact Pam Chandler or Lisa Hamilton at 760-433-3763 Ext 110 - MABH
A special needs boy but not one to feel sorry for - more to feel inspired by
Ed came to us through SD Animal Control. He was relinquished by his previous owner because they were unable to train him. Unfortunately they did not realize that Ed was deaf! He also has a healed fracture to his skull which caused him to lose the sight in his right eye. Don't let the fact that he can not hear or see you very well, make you think he is damaged. He is FULL of love and spends his days playing with his new friends in day kamp. He is especially bonded to Cooper a yellow lab who has decided to "take care of " Ed. They are best of friends and Cooper keeps track of Ed through out the day to make sure he is okay. Cooper gets gold stars from all of our staff for being a "special friend" to our dear Ed. - MABH
About the Fuzzies

The Fuzzies were born in 2003 as a collection of currently available dogs that appealed to me as I looked through various rescue and shelter web sites. My hope was that friends would consider a rescue or shelter dog for the next addition to their families once they saw how many adorable ones were out there.

Kim's Fuzzies has grown quite a bit since then but the goal is still the same. I want to present that there are other places to adopt new family members than backyard breeders, puppy mills and pet stores (Please note that I support the aspirations of legitimate breeders to better their breeds without an eye towards pimping their dogs for money). I want to show people that their images of shelter and rescue dogs may be wrong - there are stunning dogs that end up in shelters and move to rescue every day. There are also, unfortunately, stunning and adoptable dogs that get euthanized every day because there are never enough rescues to help solve the problem. Awareness is everything.

Please do not assume that, if you see a dog you like and then they aren't on the next list that they have been adopted. I rotate the fuzzies I include to give the best exposure to a greater number of potential adoptees. Always call the shelter or rescue and ask the status of any dog you find yourself drawn to.

Additionally, if you are drawn to an animal but aren't sure you're ready for the lifelong commitment, please consider fostering (a temporary arrangement that pulls them from the danger of euthanization to live with you for a short time until they find the perfect forever family). It is so incredibly rewarding and addictive. Let me know if you need information about how to do this and I'll hook you up.

The sites that I typically pull these from are as follows, in case you or a friend are seriously considering a fuzzy and want to check out the pre-screening procedures:

San Diego Department of Animal Control - CS
Friends of County Animal Shelters - FOCAS
San Diego Humane Society - HS
Rancho Coastal Humane Society - RC
Helen Woodward Animal Center - HW
Westside German Shepherd Rescue of L.A. - GS
Labradors and Friends - LAB
Beagles and Buddies - BB
Pit Bull Rescue San Diego
Coastal Shepherd Rescue - CSR
Mission Animal and Bird Hospital - MABH

Who am I?

My name is Kim Smith and I'm just a person who happens to really love animals. With The Fuzzies, I am trying to do my small part to help out in the world. I currently live with a 7 year old golden (Borrego), a 14 year old gray tabby (Shadow), an 8 year old black tom cat (Tobee), a 4 year old black Lab (Midnight) and a 5 year old black Tom cat (Buddy). I foster for multiple rescues as they need me (mostly puppies cuz my Borrego loves puppies), do web work as asked, am on the Board of Pit Bull Rescue San Diego, as well as keeping up on Borrego's training and staying current my own animal education. If I don't know the answer to someone's question, I WILL find it out. Oh yeah - I have a full time job with the PETCO Foundation helping other rescues and shelters to succeed in our common goal as well.

I started looking through all the rescue and shelter sites when I was looking to adopt my golden a number of years ago. I was surprised at how many resources there are beyond breeders and pet stores, and I enjoyed looking through the sites and reading the stories.

Unfortunately I had a very bad experience with the rescue organization that I tried to adopt through - they actually told me that I was being irresponsible considering dog ownership since I work full time and there was no way they would consider placing a dog with me. I got furious and irrational and ended up adopting my Borrego from a disreputable back yard breeder to "show them". Don't get me wrong, I love my Borrego to death but, health-wise, she is every argument against backyard breeders. She is highly neurotic, had to have both hips replaced before she was one year old, is allergic to most foods as well as many airborne allergens...

In retrospect and calmer emotions, I realized that I had become a part of the problem, not the solution. I started to research rescue organizations that really did have the animals best interests rather than their own egos at stake. Kim's Fuzzies were borne of this research and I started emailing them to friends and family. As the word spread, the Fuzzies has grown to a subscribership of over 200 (free and no obligation) and I get emails and calls from shelters, rescues and private folks for help with whatever level of connection they need. I love it and feel like my little part really is making a difference in some canine lives!

Please, if you visit one of the fuzzies on my list, whether you adopt or not, drop me a line and let me know your opinions of the pup as this can be helpful to me in finding the perfect home for some of these dears. And of course, if you adopt, please drop me a line so I can include you as a success story for your new family member.
