07.27.07 - Sequoia National Park - Day 2 (Moro Rock, LodgePole, Tunnel Tree, Crystal Cave, Dorst Creek, campfire)

We got up early to do an 11:00 hike into Crystal Cave - which is 1.5 hours away - however evidently a big tree fell in the road and we had to reschedule to 2:00. Arnold, Beth, Ciara, Michael and I decided to hike up Moro Rock to get a glimpse of the spectacular views instead. Amazing!

After the hike we went to the Lodgepole staging area and hung out while the Ascherfelds had lunch. There were chipmunks and blue jays there.

Crystial Cave is at the bottom of this beautiful 1/2 mile hike and is a spectacular cave with all sorts of formations inside. The volunteers who are restoring it have done a great job of lighting up different elements of the cave and being able to point them out and describe them on the tour.

Once we got back to the camp site, we were pretty rested and decided to go on a hike to explore the camp ground. We had seen someone with a fishing pole so we figured there would be water nearby. We found a cute little creek and followed it down until it met up with a much larger creek - we think it is Dorst Creek. This one was amazing - lots more water and big swimmable pools. We saw lots of deer tracks and signs of bears but no actual animals. It was very peaceful being so far from civilization. We hurried back to the camp site to share our find with everyone else.

Back at the site we saw a deer wandering around the various sites and eating grass. She seemed unconcerned with the small enterage of people following her to take photos.

Dinner tonight was pasta cheech and french loaf. Brownies and roasted marshmellows of course were dessert.
